Shiva, as Sura, is all set to fly to Saudi Arabia and arrives in Chennai from Coimbatore. Only to be disheartened by the travel agent who reveals that alcohol is forbidden in the country, so is the availability of chicks. Thus starts Sura’s journey with his to-be brother in law Marthandam, played by S P B Charan, in search of a ‘quarter cutting’ before he takes that flight to Saudi Arabia. Lekha plays Sura’s girl friend and John Vijay another significant character.

Before he could lay his hands on alcohol, Sura has to encounter myriad characters (the number of which is sometimes baffling). The encounters are often engaging, sometimes pointless - but however they are, they come across as brilliantly executed pieces of gems peppered throughout the movie. You also get self-deprecating dialogues, spoofs about popular culture and Shiva’s trademark humor. S P B Charan is as riotous as a dumb looking fatso, who can innocuously provoke laughter at the drop of a hat – often about

himself. Of the myriad fleeting characters, few, such as the swelteringly slim Abhinayasri (as the cop Signaari) and Amarendran also make an impact.

Va  Quarter Cutting story of is the movie happens in one night (6.30 p.m. to 6.30 a.m.) during the month of Aadi. So there will be little rain and Amman thiruvizhas, with all the serial lamps and loudspeakers. It's a journey of two characters (played by Shiva and S.P. Charan) through this one night and the people they meet. It's essentially a comedy that has also got a sense of adventure to it. But yes, the storytelling is quirky.

Va Quarter Cutting : Go for a DRINK !

The first half is almost a drag since it takes a little while to get the drift as to what is happening in the movie. And the humungous number of characters that appear as soon as the movie opens doesn’t help either. But all that’s absolved as the movie progresses throwing up instances after instances of the director duo’s brilliant writing capabilities, which is quite natural to put it mildly. There’s comedy, but quirkily wrapped in circumstances that unfold with the clatter of opening a candy wrapped in cellophane. Some are easy to enjoy, few on the contrary.

Nirav Shah seems to have had a field day what with the entire proceedings happening in night. The dominance of red and yellow hues render the movie an almost ethereal quality. Which also sets it apart from the feel-good category. Also the characters Shiva encounter are also lowbrow that it’s difficult to stomach some of them.

But that apart, Quarter Cutting is easily a movie well ahead of its times. Whether accepted or not, the movie has the potential to set benchmark for quirky little gems.
