Promise for Indians
A crowd of about 60,000 packed Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in central Delhi for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games on Sunday. Audience members danced in their seats, and the applause was spontaneous and enthusiastic.
> The Indian wrestler Sushil Kumar, center, carried the Queen's Baton into the stadium.
> Indian dancers wearing the colors of the national flag performed during the ceremony.
>Enormous dancing puppets were part of the show.
> Sunday's exuberant opening ceremony, including a performance by drummers, was a welcome change in Delhi, where preparations for the Commonwealth Games have been notable for blown deadlines, accusations of corruption, filthy living quarters for athletes and the collapse of a footbridge that injured more than two dozen people.
> In sharp contrast to the run-up to the Games, the opening ceremony started on time, and appeared to be meticulously planned.
